Breaking the Sound Barriers
June 17th, 6pm, Southwest Community Library, Kitchener Much of today’s industry-standard music production tools are not designed with the disability community in mind. In this session of Breaking the Sound Barriers, we are thrilled to welcome special guest Gift Thsuma. Join us at the Southwest Library as we explore ways to make music production more accessible for everyone. Gift Tshuma is a disability rights activist and a music composer, with a background in Sociology and a minor in Law and Society from Concordia University. For more than a decade, he has been heavily involved in advocacy for disability rights and accessibility issues in Ontario & Quebec. He currently holds positions at March of Dimes Canada, Centre For Sustainable Practice In The Arts, Tshuma Consulting, and Blurring the Boundaries. For 15 years, he has been serving as an Accessibility Consultant for the Government of Canada, educational institutions, rehabilitation centres, and non-profit organizations. Gift carries a wealth of experience in diverse fields; he is committed to social justice issues and in the empowerment of marginalized communities. Each session of Breaking the Sound Barriers features guest speakers from the disability community and hands-on opportunities to learn, design, and experiment with alternative, accessible methods for composing, recording, and performing music. Whether you’re a creator with a disability, someone looking to push creative boundaries, or both—come hang out, make music, and connect with a like-minded community! This program is proudly presented in partnership with the Canadian Accessible Musical Instruments Network and Andreas Kitzmann, Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University. All levels of musicality and physical ability are welcome! For registration and more info see:KPL
